STEM Programs

STEM Connections: Building Resilience Through Science

“STEM Connections: Building Resilience Through Science” is a program that utilizes creative, hands-on, peer-led science experiments that are created through a trauma-informed lens. Some of the experiment topics include states of matter/changing matter, chemical vs. physical reaction, mixtures, earth science, mass, and force and motion. In addition, we will provide information about diverse young inventors to show science has been and continues to be advanced by individuals of various races, genders, ethnicities, languages, abilities, family backgrounds and incomes.

Also, various people work as scientists and engineers.   These experiments teach students the power of resilience as they recognize and analyze alternative explanations and predictions for everyday problems. Students learn that although science is based on mathematics, scientific knowledge continues to grow and change. While thinking both logically and critically, students examine patterns and identify outliers, or data points that can impact or radically shift outcomes. Students walk away with the secure realization that that scientific explanation, such as life, is subject to revision and improvement. This unique project is managed by Moneeca “MoPoetry” Phillips, Certified Peer Recovery Supporter and Mental Health First Aid Responder.
